Review on the LoRaWAN seminar event held by Gunma Future Innovation LAB
In this article we introduce last weeks event called ‘Opening up a new digital era’ in which we joined by instructing the participants on how to setup LoRaWAN systems.
Gunma prefecture can be considered as the forerunner for LoRaWAN and The Things Network in Japan. Currently 32 of the approx. 100 LoRaWAN gateways registered on The Things Stack in Japan are stationed in Gunma prefecture.

To further increase the understanding of the technology the Gunma Future Innovation LAB Japanese facilitated a seminar event. The event consisted of four parts:
- Introduction of LoRaWAN technology The Things Network community, and project in Ota City by Ryomo Systems Co., Ltd.
- Hands-on experience connecting LoRaWAN sensors to the TheThingsStack and showing the data on a dashboard by ELSPINA VEINZ Inc. as representatives of The Things Network Takasaki community.
- An ideation session on the topic of how to solve regional issues using LoRaWAN.
- A networking session for the participating students and representatives from IT-related companies.
Utilizing the facilities of Gity in Maebashi City, the hands-on seminar proceeded in a relaxed atmosphere.
We had the honor to introduce the participants to the LoRaWAN technology through a hands-on session using our EM-ELHT01 devices. The session was well received. And though the allotted time of 45 minutes was short all participants were able to connect their devices to the network server and visualize their data. This shows how intuitive and fast the setup of LoRaWAN devices can be even for untrained staff.
To visualize the data of the devices we prepared a dashboard using TagoIO. The participants enjoyed seeing the effect of heating the devices with their hands as the devices were set with an uplink rate of one message every 2 minutes.
Overall, the event was well received, being fully booked with 13 participants from the industrial sector and 11 participants from academics. We anticipate that the lively attendance and discussions will strengthen the local community and lead to further expansion of the LoRaWAN infrastructure in Gunma prefecture. And we are looking forward to future events to promote LoRaWAN and TheThingsNetwork in Japan.
